It is believed that John was an officer with the 4th Battalion York and Lancashire Regiment (Hallamshires), a Territorial unit. He seems to have then moved to another unit for active service. Apparently he served in Iceland during WW2. He may have later been a bank clerk and then a manager at Barclay's.
