1890 - Joined the Royal West Kent Regt for long service at Portland on 16th October 1890 aged 15 years and 9 months. Living with parents and no previous trade. Born in the parish of St Pauls, Maidstone. Height 4 ft 10 ¾ ins, weight 84 lbs, chest 28/29 ins, fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair. Scar on left arm. Religion stated as Church of England but altered to Wesleyan on 11 June 1895.

1891 - Promoted from boy to Drummer on 12 Jan 1891.

1892 - Army record states that he was granted 1d G C Pay on 18 Oct.

1893 - Attained the age of 18 years on 12 Jan 1893 - army service record.

1896 - Appointed L Cpl on 22 Jan 1896 and granted 2d GC Pay on 13 Oct 1896.

1898 - Promoted to Corporal on 4 April 1898.

1901 - Appointed L Sgt 4.2.01, then promoted to Lieutenant on 28.12.01.

1902 - Had now served his 12 year commission but "Permitted to re-engage for the R W Kent Rgt at Malta, for such term as shall complete a total service of 21 years".

1903 - Posted Sergeant on 23.4.03.

1904 - Granted Service Pay Class I @ 7d a day on 1 April.

1904 - Sergeant in 3rd Royal West Kent Regiment, living in the Barracks, Maidstone, when he married. This was a Militia Regiment (part-time) who would have gone to camp for field training at least once a year.

1910 - Permitted to continue in the service beyond 21 years, dated 14.10.10.

1914 - Promoted to Company Sergeant Major on 16.9.14.

1915 - Promoted to Warrant Officer Class II on 29.1.15.

1916 - Posted with the British Expeditionary Force on 3.10.16 and appointed acting R.S.M. on 31 October, reverting to C.S.M. on 16 December.

1918 - Discharged and reappointed to a temporary commission in the Labour? C___ on 14.3.1918, having served for 27 years and 153 days. Between 12.9.1918 and 2.10.1918 he spent 21 days in hospital at Devonport with a bullet wound to his left forearm.

c.1930 - Believed to still be in the Army.

1934 - Lived at 40 King Edward Road, Maidstone.

Robert is believed to have been a Captain in the West Kent Regiment and may have been an administrator at the local hospital (Maidstone?).
