    Burial ground Church

Inscription Sacred to the memory of The Rev John Davies, DD, Rector of Gateshead, who died Oct 21 1861 and was interred at St Cuthbert's, Bensham, This monument was erected by a body of his parishioners as a testimonial of their esteem for a Pastor, who had faithfully and zealously performed his sacred duties in Gateshead, for upwards of 21 years, and shown his flock an example of a meritorious and virtuous life. During his incumbency, and mainly owing to his exertions, the new church of St Cuthbert's, and the Lady Vernon School, Bensham, also the new National Schools, Gateshead, were erected, and many other institutions, tending to the spiritual welfare of an increasing population, were established. (Freestone tablet on slate frame on south wall in the chancel, close to the chancel arch.)
