Much of the information on John & Eva's family was provided by Vern Erickson, descendant of Thomas Copas. John was born in Middleton Township, Columbiana Co, Ohio to Aaron Copas and Phoebe Guy. In 1840, John lived in South Beaver Township, Beaver Co. PA.

Crawford County Deed records show that in 1857, John purchased land for $3.14 at public auction at the courthouse in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin. He bought an additional 40 acres in 1859 for $200. John sold this land to his brother, Thomas Copas in 1860 for $50.00. John Copas purchased the South half of the NE Quarter of Section 28, Township 10, Range 3 West in 1857. In 1859 he bought 40 acres of the SE Quarter of the NW Quarter of Section 27, Township 10, Range 3 West.

John's tombstone (see Mook Cemetery records) says he died May 19, 1891 and lived 74 yrs, 9 mos, 5 dys, which means he was born on August 14, 1816. This conflicts with his death record. The following death record is suspect. John's parents were Aaron & Phoebe Copus, yet the date died is just one day off from the tombstone record. This death record has John's birth date as 10 Feb 1815.

At the time I visited Mook Cemetery in June 2009 (see my photo) the tombstone for John Copus was knocked over on the ground. I did not see his wife, Eva Copus', name on the tombstone, but it could be on the other side. I hope someone has repaired this!
