John Chapman settled in Colchester, Connecticut where on July 3, 1704he was granted at a town meeting the first division of upland at thewest side of New London Road where "norage" Road goes across LymeRoad. At a town meeting held on December 30, 1706, John Chapman waschosen a way warden with Josiah Strong. At a town meeting held onOctober 13, 1707 John Chapman and John Skinner were chosen to lay outthe divisions of town land. Information downloaded from Don Dickenson's GedCom version 2/7/2002. John was probably the eldest son, and removed from New London to Colchester in 1706 with his family, where he was living in May, 1748, when it was noted that he would be 95 years old the next November. On July 3, 1704 he was granted at a Colchester town meeting the first division of upland at the west side of New London Road where "norage" Road goes across Lyme Road. At another town meeting December 30, 1706, John Chapman was chose a way warden with Josiah Strong. And on October 13, 1707, he and John Skinner were chosen to lay out the divisions of town land. "North of the Holmes Farm was a lot of 100 acres laid out to John Chapman in 1715, and sold to John Gustin in January 1719/20". [History of Salem 1935 - unpublished manuscript by Geo. N. Bates at CT State Library] On April 7, 1734 John Chapman, age "above 70 years" was baptized in the First Congregational Church in Colchester, New London Co., Connecticut. On April 20, 1735 John Chapman Jr. and his wife were admitted to the church. From The Chapman Family ... He deeds property April 15, 1706 (town of Colchester) to his brother William, of New London... There are deeds of land on Colchester records to six sons, and whether he had daughters, does not appear. Records, published in 1901 by James Knox Blish, a quotation from early Colchester town records states: "We have ascertained where some more of the early settlers were from, viz... John Chapman, from New London..." (p. 156.) Minutes of several early Colchester town meetings contain references to John Chapman as both a landowner and a resident of Colchester, including those of January 21, 1703 and July 3, 1704. On April 15, 1706, "John Chapman of Colchester" purchased land in Colchester from Daniel Stabins of New London, a deed witnessed by John's brother, Jeremiah Chapman. |
