!BIOGRAPHY: Doris Cassedy and Laura Biiter visited Lynn, Pennsylvania a few years ago to check gravestones. Using that information, queries of FamilySearch Records yielded the following: Thomas Cassedy b 1775 Ireland, in 1850 resided in Springville, Susquehanna Co., PA, and Anna Cassedy b 1782 NH, in 1850 resided in Springville, Susquehanna Co., PA,, Thomas and Anna may be John's father and mother. Note that Lynn and Springville are within a mile or two of each other. !BIOGRAPHY: Info from Cassedy genealogy document. 2/2010 and above US Census information. JOHN CASSEDY, son of Thomas (1) and Susannah (Spencer) Cassedy, b. Renesselear Co., NY 8 Sep. 1803; d. Halfmoon, NY 17 Dec. 1875 (age 72)(cause of death - paralysis); bur. Baptist (Gorsline) Cemetery, Halfmoon, NY 20 Dec. 1875 (Grave within sight of his home - The Cassedy Homestead); he was a farmer, vestryman, school board member and community leader; he was postmaster of Lynn, PA in 1836 (the first post office was established in 1836); ca. 1805 he moved with his parents to Springville, PA (the family was probably coming to be with Jeremiah Spencer his paternal grandfather); he remained in Springville and neighboring Lynn until May 1839 when he moved to Halfmoon; he was Town Superintendent of Common Schools from 1854-1856 (this entailed creating new school districts, fencing school lot, inspecting the schools & teachers, appoint pupils for normal school and moving a school house (note-The Town Superintendents of Common Schools were elected for 1 yr. Terms, beginning in 1844 John Cassedy served during 1854-6 when the system was terminated and supervision by assembly districts followed) and Town Collector in 1860 for the Town of Halfmoon per History of Saratoga Co., NY pg 347; religion Episcopalian; An account book kept by John Cassedy - front cover-Left PA May 1839, settled in Halfmoon, Saratoga Co., NY April 16th 1840, and inside the back cover-commenced housekeeping Halfmoon, NY April 16th 1840, moved barn June 6th 1840; The 1830 census shows Thomas, John’s father, having 5 persons in his household including 2 males between 20 and 30 years of age, it is reasonable to assume 1 of these males was John; By 1835 John was listed among the “taxables” for Springville, PA; records from 1836 show him as Post Master of Lynn, PA a small village in the south part of Springville township; an old account book kept by John seems to indicate he operated a livery in Lynn, PA He m. Halfmoon, NY 26 Jun. 1837 (by Rev. Wm. Allanson, witness W.A. Tyler - per records of St. Luke’s Church, Mechanicville) MARY BASSETT TYLER (1506), daughter of William Augustus (1505) and Mary Bassett (Knowles) Tyler, b. Halfmoon/Troy, NY 5 Nov. 1807; d. Mechanicville, Saratoga Co., NY 24 Oct. 1863 (age 56); bur. Baptist (Gorsline) Cemetery, Halfmoon, NY 27 Oct. 1863; In her husbands weather journal entry dated 1 Apr. 1853 he mentioned his wife had cousins in Lee, MA John had a business in Springville, PA so he and his wife moved there after they were married. The couple lived 3 years in Pennsylvania and 3 months after their 2nd child was born they moved to Halfmoon, NY about 4 miles from her father in New York. After 4 years in the “house down the road”, they moved to the Tyler house called “The Homestead”. On 2 Apr. 1852, John Cassedy and his family moved to “Mr. Tyler’s place”. Tyler’s wife had died in 1842 but there were 2 unmarried daughters, Harriet and Lydia, who continued to live there with their father. The wing on the northwest corner of the house was added for their use. John Cassedy and his family were helped in setting up housekeeping through the purchase of what the family knows as “the house down the lane” by his father-in-law, William A. Tyler. This house was about 4 miles from the Tyler “homestead” on a lane off what is now known as Vosburg Rd. (note-Vosburg Rd is on the left off Route 146 before Pruyn Rd & Farm to Market Rd.) Mr. Tyler took a note from John Cassedy for about 12 hundred dollars in cash plus grain, cattle, hogs, sheep and flour an April 1, 1840. This bill was seemingly never repaid, since the title of the property was conveyed to William A. Tyler again in 1844.
