John Butterfield was born on 12 January 1697/98 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.1 He was the son of Benjamin Butterfield and Sarah Bates.1 He married Anna Hildreth on 10 December 1721 in Chelmsford, Middlesex County, Massachusetts.2 He died by 1766 when his sons sold a large part of this estate, later the most valuable part of the city of Lowell, to Thomas Fletcher.

    In January 1728/29 John purchased a large portion of the Brenton farm in Naticook now Litchfield, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire.3 On 24 March 1763 he divided his Chelmsford lands between his sons Benjamin and Ephraim, reserving life interest.3
