Facts and Events
In September 1705, John Bunch and Sarah Sladen petitioned the county court to be married. The petition indicates that Bunch is the son of a white woman and a man with some degree of African ancestry; but as he was only 1/8 African, he was not at the time technically mulatto, which apparently was the cause of the petition. As a result of the petition, the government issued a statute defining the status of mulattos as any child, grandchild, or great-grandchild of a black or Native American. Bunch received the first of three grants of land in Hanover County in 1722; two years later he obtained a second 400 acres adjacent to the first; and a third adjacent tract in 1725. The earliest grant identifies him as John bunch "junior," indicating the nearby presence of another John Bunch.[1] References
