Obit Reads Sherton Mason County Journal 10-15-1940 Island's Beloved "Uncle John" dies Harstine Island lost one of its earliest residents yesterday in the passing of John George Buffington, 68 who homesteaded on the island 52 years ago. Uncle John, as he was affectionately known to his neighbors, died at Shelton hospital, where he was taken last week. He had been in failing health for several years. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 Saturday on Harstine Island, where burial will be. Mr. Buffington is survived by his wife, Harriet, and a nephew, Melvin Sutton, both of the island. He was born in Iowa on November 14 1862 and had farmed all of his life.
