Facts and Events
(Research of Rhondab): From Mason county Journal August 15 1890 Mrs. Sutton, who was fatally burned at Harstine Island near the mouth of Budds Inlet, died Sunday. She was heating some alcohol on a stove when it ignited. Her clothing caught fire and the house was burned to the ground. She was rescued by her father whose hands were burned to a crisp. She died from the shock. Augus 29, 1890 Allyn Times Reprint: Mrs. Suttons sad accident: one of the saddest accidents that has ever fallen to our lot to record occurred on Harstine Island a few miles below Allyn Thursday afternoon. Our readers will remember that some three or four weeks ago fire destroyed Mr. J. (Jeremiah's) house, located on the Island, and all the contents, an account of which was given in the times. After this fire, which left Mr. Buffington in destitute circumstances he moved into his son's house (John Buffington) near by, intending to stay there until he could rebuild a house for himself. His neighbors and friends gave him provisions, clothing and things necessary for housekeeping and he and his wife both of whom are nearly 70 years of age, had barely got settled in their new home when fire again visited, this time with much more serious results than the first. On the day of the last fire Mrs. Buffington was sick and her daughter, Mrs. Moses Sutton was with her attending to her wants. In the afternoon Mrs. Sutton commenced preparing some medicine for her mother, over the stove, and one of the ingredients being alcohol it took fire and exploded, throwing the burning liquid over Mrs. Sutton's face and body, and about the house. Mrs. Sutton was instantly wrapped in flames and was frightfully burned, the flesh on her hands, arms, and parts of her body being cooked and crisped to the bone. Her Father (Jeremiah) and her mother (Ann Catherine) made every effort possible to save her. They succeeded in tearing her clothes from her body, but she had received fatal injuries, and after lingering in great agony until 9 oclock the next morning death relieved her of her suffering. Mr. Buffington burned his hands and his arms very seriously and had since been in a precarious condition, but is now somewhat better and it is thought will pull through, although he will be badly crippled. Mrs. Buffington received painful burns on one of her hands but as compared with the others her injuries are slight. The house and its contents burned to the ground. Also Charity Elleanora Buffington
