John Brown’s origins have yet to be established. Her first confirmed sighting is in 1803, by which time he was married to Mary Hogg and living at Allanton in the parish of Edrom, Berwickshire. Mary and John had at least three children, although baptisms have only been found for two of them. Those two baptism records describe John as being a wright. John has yet to be traced after 1806. Many years later, the death certificates of his daughters Rabina and Sydney both describe him as having been a joiner.

1.   Deaths and burials were only sporadically recorded at Edrom in the time John and Mary were living there. Apparently the register records a few entries up to about 1822, but then only records one death between 1822 and the start of civil registration in Scotland in 1855.
