John B.E. Bourie

The oldest know child was John B.E. Bourie was listed as a 12 year old in the 21 August 1850 US census of the family in Perry Township, Noble County, Indiana. This would indicate the birth in early 1838 and would be the first child born to the newly wed couple of Teressa Driver and David Bourie.

In the 6 June 1860 US Census, John is still living with his family in Perry Township and is enumerated as a "Muskrat Trapper". Soon after, on 30 June 1860, Henry Hartetler performed the marriage ceremony for John Bourie and Eliza Jane Shields, daughter of Elizabeth and George Shields. John may well have been named after his uncle John Baptist Bourie who is identified as a member of the Native American Potowatomi tribe in numerous treaties with the US Government. Nothing further is known about this first of four sons at this time.
