In her application for pension benefits John's mother gave his birthplace as Hagerstown, Maryland and his birth date as 17 Feb 1851. "Pennsylvania's Soldiers' Orphan Schools list his birth date as 17 Feb 1853.

John was admitted to White Hall Soldiers Orphan School 17 Feb 1853; discharged 17 Feb 1869. He is listed as a "sixteener". In "remarks" he is working in the machine shops in Altoona. In census information from later years his occupation is listed as "carpenter".
