John was the illegitimate son of Sarah Bewsher, who was illiterate. Adescendant writes: "A family legend had it that John was sired by a Lonsdale of Lowther and Muncaster Castles and that he worked at Lowther as a gardener where he met Ann Moody, a governess, whom he married. But no evidence of John's presence at Lowther or Muncaster has been found beyond their marriage at Muncaster Parish Church" .
