"John Alfred Austin, who served in the Civil war as captain of a Pennsylvania company of volunteers, was a noted school teacher, and for a number of years principal of the Waterford Academy, in Waterford, Pennsylvania, where his death occurred, at the age of sixty-two years." CONFLICT: 1870 AND 1880 Census identifies him as a druggist.
