Facts and Events
John was the son of William Kier and Vestina VenLou Winans Armstrong. He was the grandson of John Cisney and Martha Kier Armstrong and Corporal James Jacob and Lovira Ann Huntley Winans who are all buried in West Mecca Cemetery. John married Leah May Harris Dec. 23, 1916 in Cuyahoga City, OH. They settled in Mecca, OH where John was a farmer. John's children helped their father work the land and farming was how he earned his living and in about 1930 began working at Richard's Milling Co. John and his family enjoyed their abundant farm and their status in Mecca Twp. until they were bought out by the government in the early 1940's when a dam was made for Mosquito Reservoir. In 1943, the Armstrong and neighboring farm buildings were razed to make way for the new lake. John's farm now lays beneath the lake along with remnants of the old schoolhouse (Mecca Centralized School) that his children attended. The family relocated to Bazetta. John and Leah had eighteen children. The first two were sons who did not survive infancy. The following sixteen are Ila "Ike" Harvey, Clara Webb, Doris Knapp, Jewell Craven, John Jr., Pauline Postlewaite, Charlotte Lynn, June Lorraine Perkins, Charles, Paul, Joyce Guinaugh, Joan Mellish, Leah Phillips, Willard "Bill", Barbara Lutz, and Sharon Woods.
