About John Anderson, Sr.

Few records have been found naming this John Anderson. We do know from the Augusta County, Virginia court record [listed below] that the family had been living in East Nottingham Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania prior to their migration to Augusta County. It appears that John Anderson likely died in Pennsylvania prior to the rest of his family moving to Augusta County. We also know that the Anderson family was close to the family of William Francis, who died Feb. 1735 in East Nottingham, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and whose eldest son John Francis (c1719-1786), also migrated with the Anderson's to Augusta County and acquired land nearby in Beverley Manor.

There is a "supposed" record [deed] for 400 acres, found in Spotsylvania County, Virginia in 1735 that some researchers have cited as likely belonging to this John Anderson, but the following year when he sold that 400 acre tract, that John Anderson is listed as "of King William County, Virginia", indicating that the Spotsylvania County John Anderson is likely an entirely different person.

We know from the following Orange County, Virginia Court Record [Order Book B, pg. 158], that John Anderson's apparent eldest son George Anderson imported his family "from Ireland to Philadelphia, and from thence into this Colony" [Virginia]:

May 22, 1740, George Anderson came into court, and saith, that he imported himself, Elizabeth, his wife, William, Margaret, John and Francis Anderson from Ireland, to Philadelphia, and from thence into this Colony, at his own charges, and that this is ye first time of his proving his rights, in order to obtain land which is ordered to be certified.

Augusta County, Virginia land records and Tinkling Spring Baptismal records that sons George, John, James and William Anderson acquired land nearby in Beverly Manor and had children baptized at Tinkling Spring Church by Rev. John Craig. A Jacob Anderson also had one son, John that was baptized in 1747 by Rev. Craig, but it is questionable if Jacob was a possible additional son of John Anderson, Sr.

Additional records need to be found on this Anderson Family to prove any other suspected relationships.

Records in Augusta County, VA

From Chalkley's:

Vol. 1 - DECEMBER 21, 1757. (85) Margaret Anderson [wife of this John Anderson] swears that she was well acquainted with Wm. Francis, of Chester Co., Township of East Nottingham, now decd., and that John Francis, of this County of Augusta, was the eldest male issue of the said William by Ann, his first wife, which, on motion of John, is certified. [Note: this record proves the previous location of this Anderson family, in Chester County, Pennsylvania].

Notes

Mr. Anderson perhaps had another son, Jacob?, who had a son in Tinking Springs, near Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia (where his other sons wer located):

Jacob Anderson, had son John, bapt. 3/2/1747

In Skillern Family History and Genealogy - Including the Family of John and Rebecca Maxwell Anderson, researched and compiled by Darlene R. Appell and Ethelmae Eylar Carter we read on page 27:
John Anderson, earliest known and immigrant ancestor of this Anderson family in America, was born about 1690, came to America from Ireland via Philadelphia, and died (probably in Pennsylvania) before the family moved to Virginia in 1740. His wife, Margaret was "imported" into Orange County, Virginia with others of her family, in May 1740, by her eldest son George. She was born about 1695 and died in Augusta County, Virginia in 1764. Her will, dated May 4, 1761 and probated in Augusta County on March 20, 1764, is found in Will Book 3, page 311. The children of John and Margaret Anderson were: George, John, James and William. William, b. ca 1718, first married Margaret (Reid?) and then in 1746, Elizabeth Campbell (born in Ireland).
William Anderson's importation into Orange County, Virginia, was proven by his elder brother George, in May 1740. William was granted a land patent by James Blair on December 1, 1740, of 90 acres in Augusta County, "south side of Cathey's River." His neighbors were John Moffett and John Francis. Later, two adjacent purchases were made, one of 400 acres in March 1747, and the other of 82 acres on August 16, 1756. In 1742 he serrved as an ensign in Colonel James Patton's Company of Militia for Orange County."

Notes for John Anderson:
John 01/10/1735 Spotsylvania Co,
400a adj Gawin Corbin southside of Robinson Run
patents 16/444
this patent was probably obtained by the elder John Anderson while he was still a resident of Pennsylvania, and is the origins of his son's moves into central Virginia. However if the son John is older than we think, it may be his.

Note: This was probably NOT the same John Anderson based upon the deed listed in the following year [1736]:

Spotsylvania County, VA Deed Book C, 1734-1742
March 12, 1736. John Anderson of King William Co. to Robert Williamson of Caroline Co. £30 curr. 400 acres in Spotsylvania County, granted sd. Anderson by patent Jany. 10, 1735. John Haley, Thos. Sparks, Thos. x Holcomb. June 7, 1737. [Virginia County Records, Spotsylvania County, 1721-1800, Crozier, pg. 143]

  3.   Andersons Were Pioneer East Tennessee Settlers, by John Wilson, in Chattanoogan.com. (Chattanooga, Tennessee).

The Andersons were pioneer settlers of Western Virginia and East Tennessee, and they helped secure the Revolutionary War victory over the British. Col. John Anderson was marching with the forces of Andrew Jackson when he died in Alabama in 1814. His sons, Josiah McNair Anderson and John Anderson, sent sons to different armies during the Civil War.

Of Scotch-Irish background, the Andersons were in Northern Ireland then went to Augusta County, Va. John Anderson was born there in 1750, the son of William Anderson and Elizabeth Campbell. William Anderson, who was born about 1718, was the son of immigrants John and Margaret Anderson. John Anderson [Sr.] apparently died in Pennsylvania about 1740 prior to his widow moving the family to the western portion of Virginia. Margaret Anderson lived until 1764.

Their sons, in addition to William, were George, John and James. William's first wife, Margaret, died in 1743 at the birth of a daughter, Margaret. William Anderson had then married Elizabeth Campbell, who survived until 1804. William Anderson lived until 1794. Their children also included Mary who married William Skillern, Rebecca who married Samuel Wallace and then James Grigsby, Elizabeth who married Samuel Anderson, William, George who married Mary Breedon, Robert who married Margaret Young, Alexander who married Esther Kirkland and then Esther Crosby, and Jean.</P> John Anderson in 1775 married Rebecca Maxwell, whose brothers were Revolutionary soldiers and early Tennessee settlers. John Anderson settled on the Clinch River in the section that became Washington County, Va. His large holdings were centered around the "Block House, which was a much-frequented stop along the Wilderness Road that led to Kentucky.
