Built many churches. He was erecting the first corn mill in Mill River when he died. He was the first town clerk of Hatfield and one of six men designated to survey and lay out the highway between Hadley and Windsor, CT. Fought in King Phillip's War and the Turner Falls Fight (a.k.a. Great Falls). Lived for a while in Hartford. Laid the foundation for the meeting house in Springfield,MA and hung the bell.

He served in King Philip's War and was in the fight at Great Falls on May, 19, 1676. Afterwards he was a captain in the militia. During the Hatfield massacre on September 19, 1675, his mother was killed, his barn was burned and his six year old daughter Abigail was taken to Canada by the Indians. She was ransomed eight months later.

6g grandfather of Emily Dickinson through daughter Elizabeth.
