- ↑ This page says born 1698, though his birth was not recorded, and no indication is given of how this presumed estimate was arrived at. 1698 would place John after Mercy b. 30 Oct 1696 and before Abigail b. 28 Jul 1699, which is feasible if the birth is in early 1698, but is a little tight.
Source:Vinton, John Adams. Vinton Memorial, Comprising a Genealogy of the Descendants of John Vinton of Lynn, 1648, p. 292, says John was b. 1694, apparently based on Vinton's assertion that John d. 1762, age about 67 (also seen in Mitchell's History of Bridgewater and others). If this comes from a gravestone, it is not stated. The 1759 death record cited in S1 seems so clearly to belong to this John Alden, since it names both his wives, and if it is accepted as valid, it undermines the basis for Vinton's birth estimate. Additionally, the birth would have to be more like mid-1695 to squeeze John in between Ebenezer b. Jan 1693/4 and Mercy b. Oct 1696, but this is an even tighter squeeze than the other estimate.
What is known is that John is the last of three sons named in his father's will [so born after Ebenezer who was born in 1694], that he married in 1727 [so any date up to 1706 is reasonable], and his first wife was born in 1706. The transcription of the original Bridgewater records found in Source:Mayflower Descendant, p. 3:9, actually numbers the children 1-8 in the family listing, excepting only John, who is not included in the list. This strongly suggests that John's birth was last, hence after Jemima b. Jan 1702/3, possibly as late as 1705?
