Johannes HOUSHELL

Birth and Relationship to Family

In his WILL, Johannes appoints "my two brothers Jacob and Mathias HOUSHAL to be the Executors of this my Last will and testament."[1]. As discussed in Kasper's profile page, we know there is a relationship (perhaps father-son) between Jacob and Kasper, so we also know that Kasper shares this same familial relationship with Johannes (as well as Mathias).
Like his brothers, Johannes was probably born on the European continent, most probably near Neuwied, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. A tombstone which is said to be his and which is also said to have been taken from the graveyard that was once on his property (and mentioned in his WILL), gives his year of birth as 9 July 1698 [2].

Life in New Jersey

In 1729, Johannes Houshell came to the Amwell Valley and purchased land from Joseph Arney along the 'Old York Road'. (West Jersey Deed Book O, pp 197 - 200)[4]. On 8 July 1730, he along with his brother Jacob and many others, are naturalized as citizens of the Province of New Jersey[3]. In 1734 and again in 1736, he and his wife Neeltje were at the Readington Church to baptise sons (first Johannis, then Pieter) [5]. He was a freeholder of Amwell in 1741 (Hunterdon County Freeholders). In 1757 he witnessed the WILL of Johann William Popplesdorf, whose family also had roots at Neuwied and Fieldkirchen[4]. Johannes HOUSHELL of Amwell signed his WILL on February 5, 1761; it was probated 4 April 1761[1]. By the translation on the grave marker, he died on 13 March 1761 at age 62[2]

Family

Listed in the WILL[1] composed by Johannes are:
- Wife Nelly HOUSHAL (assumed to be Neeltje listed in the baptisms)
- Sons Peter and William.
- Son-in-law Andrew Trimmer (we now know this to be husband of daughter Susannah)
- grand-daughter Mary Trimmer
- daughter Elizabeth (who had children, but those children are not specifically named in the document)
- Appoints "my two brothers Jacob and Mathias HOUSHAL" to be the Executors of this my Last will and testament."
NOT listed in the will, is son Johannis who was baptized at the Readington Church.
