He was known as Henry Meier; his birth is recorded in Birth Register, Evangelical-Lutheran Church, Herford, Germany, the town in which his father was a locksmith. He was born at house #449 in Alstadt Herford (the old section of Herford) and baptized 21 November according to church records. The godparents were not named. His mother died when he was five years old, his father remarried. He came to America in the 1870s with his grandmother Hanne Margarethe Louisa Holtkamp Meier and first lived in Michigan near his uncle Gottlieb Meier (the two men were only ten years apart in age and seemed to live near each other whether the area be near Good Harbor, Michigan; the Chicago area, or Milks Grove in Iroquois County, Illinois). Henry followed his Uncle Gottlieb to Iroquois County and married there. He lived briefly in Chicago, then returned to Clifton, Illinois where he owned and operated a farm just west of Clifton. Henry received his final certificate of naturalization 17 October 1896, renouncing allegiance to the Emperor of Germany. The Advocate, Clifton, issue of 13 April 1933 reported, "Kern Bros. of Chicago, sold Wednesday to Henry Meiers of Clifton, one of two farms owned by them, formerly a part of the Cummings estate, containing 160 acres. The land is located 1/2 mile west of Clifton and brought $85 and acre cash, or an advance of $10 an acre over what the Kern Bros. Paid for the land a short time ago. " Henry and Elizabeth were members of the Lutheran Church at Chebanse and are buried at Chebanse, Illinois. In 2002 their great grandson David Meier operates and lives on this farm.
