I don't know about the dates of your inquiry, but I have two ancestors who
left the area in the 1850's and boarded the ship at LeHavre.

Many Baden, Wuerttemberg and Palatine travelers of the eighteenth and up to
mid-nineteenth century, used the shipping lanes of the principal rivers to
take them to the principal ports of departure: Antwerp, Rotterdam and Le
Havre. Apparently, the two Sieber brothers traveled the shipping lanes of
the Seine River from their home in Rüppurr to LeHavre France and departed
LeHavre to sail to America. My great-grandmother Schelli traveled from
Urloffen to LeHavre and sailed from there also.

The reasoning to travel through France was to get to Havre for embarkation.
It was closer than going down the Rhein to Rotterdam and the fare from
Havre to the States was also less. Depending on time frame, the mode of travel
could have been by train in part, horse drawn cart in part, canals or rivers, or
by foot, mostly dependant on the amount of baggage.
