With nearly 200,000 burials, this is the largest public cemetery in the United States. According to the Indianapolis Star newspaper (10 Jan 1971) Crown Hill Cemetery was founded in 1863. The 540 acre site was then called "Strawberry Hill", the highest point in the city. Another article in 1970, stated that the municipally owned cemetery was the 3rd largest in acreage in the United States.

Buried at the "crown" of the hill, is the poet James Whitcomb Riley. Also buried here is the 23rd President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. Also two former Vice-Presidents. In addition, a few of the 4,000+ persons posted to WeRelate.org by "White Creek". have been interred here.
