Johan Balthasar left Erbach, Wurttemberg, Germany during 1749 due to religious persecution and forced military service, as well as hard economic conditions. Johan arrived in America from Rotterdam on Saturday September 2, 1749 at Philadelphia Pennsylvania, aboard the ship "Albany."

On April 19, 1775 Revolutionary war broke out. On September 11, 1777 Johan Balthasar, his brother Johan Jacob, along with his sons Frederick and Jacob fought in the battle of Brandywine, Pennsylvania, lead by General George Washington. Again, on October 4th, 1777 the Hetzlers followed General Washington at the battle of Germantown, Pennsylvania. They also spent the winter of 1777 at Valley Forge with the General.

Johan obtained a warranty for 150 acres of land surveyed June 20, 1785 in Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, and moved there from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania a year or two later. His father had died during 1783 and he looked westward to what seemed to him "greener pastures". He made his new home at Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania where he lived until his death in 1811. He is buried there along with his wife and two sons at Wolf's Chapel Cemetery.
