Donna Casey (BCASEY500 AT aol.com -- Clabeaux researcher) believes that this Jessie is: 1898 city directory (Buffalo) Taylor, Jessamine M. teacher, School 23 h. 68 Bird Avenue 1900 Census, 24th Ward, Enum 212, sheet 4, p 197A Taylor, Jessie, a "roomer" at 68 Bird. Birth: about 1873 Place: Bennington, NY Father: Gigson Taylor Mother: Anna Hoffman Source: IGI 2. 1900: Marriage to William E. Clabeau 27 June 1990 Witnesses were Guy Hoffman & Margaret Colter (or Cotter) He was living at 26 West Street and she was living at 68 Bird Ave. Source: Donna Casey, Birth-Marriage records, Buffalo City Hall 3. 1907: William transferred with Western Union to Chicago Photos from that timeframe. Source: William’s documented work record from Western Union 4. 1910 Federal Census: William, Jessie, Mildred Willman and Richard Willman in Chicago. Jessie enumerated as wife M, 37, Mildred as Cousin Wd, 24, Theater and Richard as Cousin, 3. Shows Jessie and William married 9 years no children. 5. 1915: April 14th – Mortgage filed with County offices for Lopez Island Property. Jessie signed locally, William signed in Chicago witnessed by Notary. Somewhere in between here, they got divorced. Based on the photo album, I’d say after 1919 but that’s just a guess. 6. 1919: April 19th, Filed May 15th – William Quit Claim Deeded San Juan Property to Jessie. William signed in Chicago witnessed by Notary. 7. 1920: Census of Lopez Island – Jessie enumerated with Frank W. Leisen as wife and Richard Willman as stepson. Foreclosure papers noted that Frank Leisen died and Jessie failed to pay taxes since November 20, 1923. Papers were filed April 1926. Papers do not give the date as to when Frank died but would be probably after 1921 and before 1926 8. 1920 Census: Seattle, WA. Mildred (32) Wd. is living with her Mother, Henrietta Lauridsen and her husband Soloman. Henrietta’s second marriage. Pictures in album of Henrietta. 9. 1921: Per Mark at the Lopez Island Museum, Richard Willman is on the school roles of Lopez Island and Jessie is listed as Parent. Mark also has a picture of Jessie at the South End Picnic dated 1921. 10. 1930 Census: Jessie Leisen is in Seattle running a boarding house. Richard is not with her. Mildred (42) is remarried to R.D. Glover (36) and living in Seattle. Richard is not with her either. Lauridsen’s still in Seattle. Miscellaneous: -I’ve looked for Richard both in the states and Canada and cannot locate him in the 1930 census. Was hoping for descendants. -Both William and Jessie remarried so I would have to think that a divorce was filed. Not filed in Chicago or with the state of Washington vital records. Might be local to the San Juan’s. -Pictures of Jessie and Richard on their way to Lopez in 1913, William must have come later in the year. He is not in those pictures. -William was on Lopez Island in 1913 and refers to pictures as “our land”, and “my first trip”. -Pictures of ‘Lauridsen’s place’ on Lopez but no date. -I found Mildred’s second marriage from a note in Williams’ address book. He showed Mildred Glover (formerly Willman) and her address in Seattle. Why would he keep in touch with her?? -I have always made the assumption that Richard Willman was Mildred Willmans’ son, which may not be correct. It is highly possible that he was Jessie’s from a previous liaison?? Although on census records she is always shown as 0 in the child column. William’s picture album is full of pictures of Richard as a child in Chicago, birthday parties, playing in the snow….lots of photos. |
