Jessie Maria Smith was born on 6th October 1874, in Liverpool, England. She was the youngest child and second daughter of Andrew Reney Smith I and Bridget Pearson. . She was Baptised on 25th October 1874 at St Matthew's Church, Toxteth, Liverpool. Her Father, Andrew Reney Smith, died on 5 December 1878, when Jessie was aged 4. The 1881 census took place on 3rd April 1881. Jessie Maria Smith is recorded, age 6 as living with her now widowed mother, Bridget Pearson and her four living siblings: John Pearson Smith, Andrew Reney Smith II, William Smith and Mary Isabella Smith. The Smith family were living at 66 Stanhope Street, Liverpool. On 28 March 1886, her mother, Bridget Pearson remarried, to Frank Frederick White. The 1891 census shows the Smith family still living at 66 Stanhope Street, Liverpool. Jessie Maria Smith is now 16 and working as a butchers assistant. She is still living with her mother, Bridget Pearson and her four living siblings: John Pearson Smith, Andrew Reney Smith II, William Smith and Mary Isabella Smith. Jessie Maria Smith married Richard McMullen 14 February 1898 in St Micheal-in-the-Hamlet, Toxteth, Liverpool. Her Brother, William Smith was one of the witnesses. On 17th November 1898, Jessie and Richard's first child, Edgar Reney McMullen was born. In the 1901 census, Jessie and Richard are living at 84 Grange Mount, Heswall, Wirral, Cheshire, England. They are living with their son Edgar Reney McMullen, aged 2. On 20th February 1902, Jessie and Richard had a second son, Harry McMullen In 1905, Jessie and Richard had a daughter, Jessie McMullen. She died in 1910. In the 1911 Census, Jessie, aged 36 and Richard are living in School Hill, Heswall, Wirral, Cheshire, England. They are living with their two sons, Edgar and Harry, along with Jessie's Father-in-law,James McMullen. On the 18th March 1921, Jessie, Richard and Harry left Liverpool and emigrated to the USA aboard the S.S Celtic. They arrived in New York on 25th March 1921. The family member that they are going to join, is listed as Jessie's sister, Mary Isabella (Smith) Woodhouse. Her brother, William Smith was given as the nearest relative from England. Edgar followed them and arrived in the USA on the 8th March 1922. Harry left and returned to England sometime before 1925, but Jessie, Richard and Edgar became naturalized Americans. On 12th September 1934, Jessie signs her declaration of intention to become a citizen of the United states. On 14th October 1936, she signs her Petition for Naturalization. By the 1940 census, she is naturalized.. Her husband, Richard McMullen, died 18 May 1938 in Portland, Oregon, USA. In the 1940 census, Jessie is recorded as a widow living alone, in Portland, Oregon. Her occupation was a Janitor She was survived by her sons: Edgar Reney McMullen (1898-1984), then also living in America, and Harry McMullen (1902-abt 1985), living in England.
