I have not yet found a record of Jessie Cullen's birth in the Provincial Archives. It is unclear how or why Jessie went west...Her obituary states that"8 or 9 years ago....she left Ontario" and then married Fred Lavery. This means that she migrated to the West about 1902..... as a single woman. She might have used an inheritance from her father since she appears to have moved west shortly after James died. It is possible that she stayed with her aunts(or sisters). The 1901 census shows her living in Portage La Prairie and workng as a domestic. It is interesting to note that Fred Lavery was a neighbour to the family with whom she stayed. Jessie suffered a stroke about a year before her death but was supposedly recovering well. It is unknown whether her pregnancy (in late 1908 -early 1909) and the stroke were related. According to her obituary, she had not completely recovered, but her death seemed to come as a surprise.

  3. Jessie's Memorial inscription states that she was 32 when she died....which means her date of birth would be in 1878..or even late in 1877. These dates increase the chances that she was James and Janet's daughter as opposed to their granddaughter. However, the 1881 census gives her birth year as 1879.
  4. Memorial Inscription gives 2 Aug 1910 as her date of death.
