In 1776 Jesse Heard was a Lieutenant in the Pittsylvania County, Virginia Minute Men.

Revolutionary War: Jesse took part in the Battle of Gwynn's Island under Gen. Andrew Lewis. When his company was ordered from Gwynn's Island to the frontier, the enlisted men were given the privilege of returning home. Captain Dillard resigned and Jesse Heard was appointed Captain. On February 14, 1779, he was in the battle of Kettle Creek in Georgia. In 1781 he was appointed a Deputy Commissioner of Provisions for the State Troops from Pittsylvania Co., VA, and in 1783 was captain of a company of militia from Henry Co., VA.

Political Career: He was a member of the Georgia House of Representatives from Wilkes County, Georgia, February 21, 1786 to September, 1794
