Jeremiah Witten was born in Prince George's County, Maryland on 30 March 1749. He was a son of Thomas Witten and Elizabeth Cecil, who married c. 1740/42. Jeremiah and Sarah had at least seven children: Mary, Thomas, John, Jeremiah, Ann, James, Nettie and Lettie. [Whether Nettie and Lettie are the same child, I don't know - they are listed separately.] Thomas Witten was born in Calvert County, Maryland on 10 September 1719. Elizabeth Cecil was born in Prince George's County on 15 March 1720, the daughter of Philip Cecil and Elizabeth Ann Gittings. Thomas and Elizabeth were still living in Maryland as late as 1767. Thomas and his son, Thomas Jr., swore an oath of allegiance to Virginia in 1777, yet he was still assessed taxes in Maryland as late as 1783. Thomas died c. 1794 in Tazewell County. Elizabeth Cecil Witten died there c. 1796

Thomas and Elizabeth had ten children:

1.) Elizabeth (17 July 1743 - ?) m. John W. Greenup. Six known children: Thomas, John, Keziah, Elizabeth, Susanna and Mary [Polly].

2.) Susanna Witten (16 September 1745 - 1832) m. Joshua Dickerson. Fourteen children: Thomas, Ruth, Eli, Levi, Elizabeth, Rebecca, Susannah, Mary, Joshua, Sarah, John, Nancy, William and Rachel.

3.) Philip Witten (8 June 1747 - c. 1832) m. Ruth Dickerson. Nine children: Elizabeth, Thomas, Noah Dickerson, Joseph, Rachel, John, Peter, James and Virginia.

4.) Jeremiah Witten m. Sarah ---- (See above)

5.) Keziah Witten (19 February 1751 - 15 May 1837) m. John Cecil. Eight children: Nancy Ann, Elizabeth, William, Phillip, Rebecca, Keziah, Jenny Malinda and Bicey.

6.) Thomas Witten, Jr. (23 January 1753 - 6 October 1841) m. Eleanor Cecil. At least eleven children: Zachariah, Rebecca, Elizabeth, William, Samuel Cecil, John, Tabitha, Malinda, James S., Hiram and Thomas.

7.) Nancy Ann Witten (9 February 1755 - 10 June 1844) m. William Cecil. At least eight children: Susannah, John, Rebecca, Samuel, Sarah, Linnie, Nancy and Elizabeth.

8.) William Witten (February 1757 - 1758)

9.) James Witten (7 January 1759 - 15 March 1831) m. Rebecca White Cecil. At least nine children: Samuel, James W.M., Linny, Cynthia, William, Thomas, Eleanor, Elizabeth and Mathilda.

10.) William Hanley Witten (7 November 1761 - 1824) m. Letitia Laird. At least six children: Elizabeth, James, John Wesley, Letitia, Mary and William Abbott.

(Of the spouses, Joshua and Ruth Dickerson were first cousins. John, Eleanor, William and Rebecca White Cecil were brothers and sisters, all children of Samuel W. Cecil and Rebecca White. Samuel W. Cecil was a first cousin of Thomas Witten's wife, Elizabeth Cecil.)

I am descended from Jeremiah Witten, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Cecil) Witten, through his son John. About 1812/13 Jeremiah, John, and twin daughters Hester and Letitia (Hettie and Lettie) moved from Virginia to live in Grayson County, Kentucky, at Rock Creek. Their neighbor was Henry Skaggs whose son James had married Jeremiah's daughter Keziah, and whose daughter Nancy would marry John Witten. Happy to exchange any information on your Grayson Co, Ky, relations. Billye Higdon
