Did you know there is a Witten Cemetery online in Sardis, Monroe Co. Ohio? In it is a stone that reads: "In memory of the first settlers on this farm, Phillip Witten 1747-1832 and Ruth Dickerson Witten 1749-1828." There are many Wittens buried there.

    Hi,
This is in response to the dates on the stone erected in Witten Cemetery, Jackson Township, Monroe County, Ohio.
When this stone was erected sometime in the 1930's or 1940's the dates of death for Philip and Ruth were interchanged. Philip died in 1828 as verified in the Monroe County Common Pleas Court records. He is not in the 1830 Census and with his son James in the 1830 census is a woman over 70 years of age which is probably Ruth Dickerson Witten.
So hopefully this error in Philip's death date will soon begin to be corrected in the genealogy records.
Also citing Witten Cemetery as being in Sardis is incorrect--Sardis is simply the current local mailing address. The political subdivision in which the cemetery is located is Jackson Township, Monroe County, Ohio and has been since the formation of the County in 1815. Prior to the formation of Monroe County, Philip's farm and the cemetery were in Grandview Township, Washington County, Ohio.
Janet Witten Conn, descendent of Philip through his son Peter Witten.
