Facts and Events
Jeremiah C. Tullis was a millionaire when he died, although every indication is that he lived like a pauper. Although he inherited quite a sizable estate from his father, Thomas B. (according to Thomas B's will), Jeremiah apparently continued to accumulate wealth, mainly through the purchase of a great deal of property and investing, but also through living very frugally. Apparently he never married, although he lived with the family of James Floyd for many years in the Cincinatti area. He was quite eccentric. According to newspaper accounts, he died on March 8, 1878, apparently due to not eating, self-neglect, and exposure. He had been ill for some time, but had refused help by physicians due to the cost. His estate was valued at over $2.5 million, and it is said that he owned over 3,000,000 acres of land all over the country. Floyd was named executor and apparently inherited the estate, although Jeremiah's sisters tried to fight it. |
