    We are scarcely surprised to see his name mentioned as an ensign on the muster-rolls of the Carignan-Salières regiment, in Chambly*’s company, bound for Canada in 1665. At that time, Jean-Vincent was only thirteen! Exceptional though it was, this was not unique; we know that on several occasions very young men served in the king’s armies.
