From <http://www.universitystory.gla.ac.uk/biography/?id=WH0165&type=P> Biography of Jane Arthur of Barshaw The Arthur Bursary was instituted in 1892 by Jane Arthur of Barshaw (1827-1907), a prominent campaigner for women's suffrage. Born in Foxbar in Renfrewshire, Jane Arthur (née Glen) was related to the famous thread manufacturers, the Coats family. In 1847 she married the Paisley draper James Arthur (1819-1885) who went on to establish Arthur & Co, one of Glasgow's most successful wholesale clothing businesses. They lived on a large estate at Barshaw near Paisley and their children included Sir Matthew Arthur, Lord Glenarthur (1852-1928). In 1873 Jane Arthur became the first woman to stand for and be elected to a school board when she was chosen to serve on the Paisley board. She established the Arthur Bursary in memory of her late husband, to promote the medical education of women.

Burke’s Landed Gentry, Scotland: Janet Stevenson Bennett McGrigor (d. 3oct1946) marr 8jul1879 Matthew Arthur, 1st Baron Glenarthur (9mar1852-23sep1928). Matthew was son of James Arthur (6mar1819-17jun1885) of Carlung, Ayrs., and Barshaw, Renfrews., and Jane Glen (d. 25may1907) (2nd daughter of Thomas Glen of Thornhill, Renfrews). Jane Glen (abt 1825-1907), daughter of Thomas Glen of Thornhill, married James Arthur (Latter Day Saints) 1847 at Paisley (IGI). Sir John Muir, East India merchant and mill owner, was Provost of Glasgow 1889-1892 (web); a daughter of his, Agnes Bunten Muir (1866-1894), married William Allan Coats, son of Margaret Glen (whose sister Jane married James Arthur (1819-1885)). Sir John Muir was partner of James Arthur in “Clan Association Steamers” from 1881 (Dic of Scottish Biography). Jane Glen, aged 79, widow of James Arthur of Carlung and Barshaw, died 25may1907 and was buried at Paisley (Scotsman, P. Sutton).

In 1881 James Arthur, merchant (1819 Paisley), wife Jane (1828 Paisley), 3 sons and 6 servants were at Barshaw Hse, Abbey, Paisley (census).
