Burke’s Landed Gentry, Scotland: Janet Stevenson Bennett McGrigor (d. 3oct1946) marr 8jul1879 Matthew Arthur, 1st Baron Glenarthur (9mar1852-23sep1928). Matthew was son of James Arthur (6mar1819-17jun1885) of Carlung, Ayrs., and Barshaw, Renfrews., and Jane Glen (d. 25may1907) (2nd daughter of Thomas Glen of Thornhill, Renfrews). James Arthur was christened 21mar1819 at Paisley (IGI). Will of James Arthur of Barshaw, Co. Renfrew, and of Carlung, Co. Ayr, Glasgow merchant, d. 17jun1885 at Carlung, reg. 1885 Ayr (scotlandspeople). Jane Glen (abt 1825-1907), daughter of Thomas Glen of Thornhill, married James Arthur (Latter Day Saints) 1847 at Paisley (IGI).

Sir John Muir, East India merchant and mill owner, was Provost of Glasgow 1889-1892 (Information, D. Robarts); a daughter of his, Agnes Bunten Muir (1866-1894), married William Allan Coats, son of Margaret Glen (whose sister Jane married James Arthur (1819-1885)). Sir John Muir was partner of James Arthur in “Clan Association Steamers” from 1881 (Dic of Scottish Biography).

In 1881 James Arthur, merchant (1819 Paisley), wife Jane (1828 Paisley), 3 sons and 6 servants were at Barshaw Hse, Abbey, Paisley (census). James founded Arthur and Co., was an astute businesman who started as a draper in a small way (Times obit of son).
