He graduated from Williams College in 1910 and earned a law degree from Columbia University in 1913. During World War I he served in the U.S. Navy attaining the rank of Ensign. Subsequently he was a partner in the investment firm of Westbrook and Smith in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
