James served in the 11th Michigan Calvary, Company I, and his postwar residence is listed as Pagusa Springs, CO. He enlisted at the ripe old age of 16. James' regiment was a small cavalry unit which was assigned to fight the rebel groups in Kentucky. 12 Oct 1863 - 15 Jul 1865. He served in the many engagements with these rebels and was on constant high alert for attacks. The group suffered many privations having to deal with mountain guerilla warfare being fought by Confederates familiar with the terrain.. He served in the They were then attached to Gen. Stoneman's brigade invading North Carolina. They fought several skirmishes with Confederate militia on their way to joining up until finally they reached their destination.. He served in the Overall, the 11th cavalry fought in 43 battles with most of them being small scale mountain battles.. He was taken prisoner by Confederate forces and suffered massive depredations as the Confederates had enough trouble feeding themselves. He was discharged 11 days later in Pulaski, TN 1 May 1865 - 6 Jun 1865 at Pendleton, SC. He resided 1865 - before 1870 in Pagusa Springs, Colorado. He resided 1870 - between 1875 and 1880 in Sharps Creek Township, McPherson County, KS.
