Facts and Events
[edit] Excerpts from the Coldwater Courier & RepublicanSeptember 10, 1897 Mrs. A.M. Cronk and children arrived yesterday from Elkart to visit J H Van Aken and family. June 24, 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Aken of Battle Creek are in Coldwater called by the serious illness of J.H. Van Aken. Mrs. E J Smith of Osseo arrived in Coldwater today, called by the death of J H Van Aken. Mrs. Smith is a sister of Mrs. Van Aken. The work of excavating for the new Van Aken barns on Monroe Street was commenced this morning. The surface earth is being placed in the sewer ditch on Monroe Street and the gravel taken from the ditch will be used in the foundations of the barn. January 22, 1908 Difficult Operation Upon Livery Horse That surgical operations upon animals are quite as necessary as upon human beings was demonstrated at the Van Aken livery barn a few days ago, when one of their grays was placed upon the table for a dangerous operation. The work was done by Dr. J M Timms and consisted of the removal of a “urinal calculus” or bladder stone. The stone was as large as a double-yolk hen’s egg and had rendered the horse practically useless for a long time past. The operation was performed successfully, and as a result the horse will probably live to see many more years of usefulness. [edit] Census
