James Mitchell Swan was a compositor with T&A Constable, a big academic book printer for all his working life except for the years spent in the army during the second world war where he was asoldier in the 7th/9th Battalion of the Royal Scots Regiment. He became a company sargeant major at the age of 22. His great friend who he went through the was with was a guy called Kenneth Lyon known as "Tiger Lyon" who emigrated to Canada atthe end of the war.
