In all cases his name is spelled STEWART. [edit] Is he Stuart or Stewart? His actual spelling (confirmed by his will, estate 1459, Armstrong County) is STUART. This is confirmed from the signature portion of his will, where he signed as James STUART shortly before he died in 1862, aged 86. The willbook scribes spelled his name STEWART at the beginning of the official transcription, but got it right (STUART) in the signature portion. [edit] What property did he own? There is an 1818 deed where James bought a 239 acre tract of land (at Clinton,PA) called "Mulberry Lane." The deed lists James "together with his brothers William David and George." James Stuart and his children at one time or another owned 5 building lots in a little town called CLINTON, PA, on the north bank of the Allegheny River, in South Buffalo Township, Armstrong County, PA. This little town was laid out in 1830. According to deeds in Armstrong Co, PA he sold land to Eleuthere Irene Dupont Bk 3 p327; Hannah and James sold land to Archibald McCall in Bk 6 p65; and daus Keziah Wenzel and Rachel Moore sold land to Chambers Wolf in Bk 41 p207; in 1860 he lived with his daughter Rachel Moore in Franklin Twp, Armstrong Co, PA; his will was dated 7 Mar 1861 and was recorded 14 June 1862 |
