James may be a member of the Nansemond Indians[1] from the area of Brunswick County, Virginia and Wake County, North Carolina. He is first recorded in the 1850 census living with his parents in Nevins Township of Vigo County, Indiana which is part of a known community of Nansemond. Many of his neighbors were leaders of this tribe such as the Bass, Evans, Chavis, Powel, Roberts, Scott, and Walden families. This community had ties to the people in Brushy Fork through intermarriage over many years. (See Citation S8 for his father's father.)
James probably fathered a child with Mary in 1859 before they were formally married, as there is a James Stewart living in the Brushy Fork community though not enumerated with Mary (but this census seems to have the Brushy Fork households in some disarray). Mary Redden probably married James around 1860 and gave him three more boys and a girl before she died between 1870 and 1877. The youngest child, Sarah, was living with her grandparents, Sim & Harriet Wilmot in 1880.
After Mary's death, James turned to the Vigo County community to find his new wife, though they married in Douglas County. She was 15 years his junior. A large segment of the Brushy Fork community moved to Kansas in the 1880s and it appears that James and his family joined them. They settled in Sterling Township, Rice County.
James joined several other men from the Brushy Fork community to travel to Mass. to enlist in the Union Army in 1863. They were part of the 55th Mass. Colored Regiment. [2] He was discharged at the end of August 1865.

James2 Stewart, born say 1750, was living in Brunswick County, Virginia, on 11 January 1774 when he and Littleberry Pompey of Sussex County purchased 270 acres in Meherrin Parish, to be equally divided between them as if two separate deeds had been made. He purchased 50 acres on the north side of the Maherrin River in Brunswick County adjoining Richard Branscomb and Thomas Evans on 23 November 1778 [DB 11:251-3; 13:280]. He was taxable in Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, from 1782 to 1796 [PPTL 1782-98, frames 19, 206, 271, 325, 401, 497, 543]. On 26 January 1778 he and Littleberry Pompey and wife Nanny Pompey (James's sister?) sold 135 acres in Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, adjoining Steward's Branch. And on 15 August 1792 James and his wife Sarah sold for 50 pounds 137 acres on Buckwater Creek in Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, adjoining Dempsey Stewart's land [DB 13:45; 15:498]. He may have been the James Stewart who married Sally Evans, 2 May 1791 Warren County, North Carolina bond, Eaton Walden bondsman. James and his wife Sarah sued (his brother) William Stewart and his wife Keziah in Brunswick County on 23 November 1795, but the case was dismissed at the defendant's costs [Orders 1795-8, 1, 211]. He was head of a Wake County household of 6 "other free" in 1800 [NC:798]. By his Wake County will, proved in November 1824, he left his land to his children: Evans, Beedy (married James Walden), Mackey (married Joel Stuart), Tazewell, Dickson, Elijah, and Elisha [WB 19:130]. His children were
i. Evans, married Milly Stuart, 15 November 1817 Wake County bond, Joel Stuart bondsman.

iii. Mackey, married Joel Stuart, 2 January 1821 Wake County bond.
