James Standing was born to James and Alice after they came to America. He lived with his mother in Saint Louis in the 1850 census. His uncle, William Standing, was named his legal guardian in 1855 in Union County, Illinois. During the Civil War, James joined the military as a Union soldier in Company D, 81st Regiment of the Illinois Volunteers from 1862 to 1865. He fought at Vicksburg, Mississippi and was wounded and captured by Confederate soldiers. He was a prisoner of war at the Andersonville prison camp for about 10 months. After the war, he married Lucy Bagnall. There is no record of children for this couple. James worked as a carpenter and was employed at a "hub factory" in Saint Louis.
