James Edward Sampson was born 14 NOV 1839 in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts to George I Sampson (2 JUL 1808 Falmouth, Cumberland, Maine - 2 AUG 1870 Lisbon, Androscoggin, Maine) and Caroline Lane (29 NOV 1809 Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts - 28 SEP 1859 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts).

[14] He was a wholesale millinery in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts.
On 4 Mar 1861 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts he married Henrietta E Bird the daughter of George Washington Bird (1809-1879 and Ann Goddard (1810-1887).[15] She was born 9 Jan 1841 in Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of daughter of George Washington Bird (1809 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts - 4 May 1879 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts) and Ann Goddard (31 Aug 1810 Framingham, Middlesex, Massachusetts - 20 Apr 1887 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts).
James Edward Sampson and Henrietta E Bird had four children:
- George Edward Sampson (born 23 Dec 1861 Boston, Suffolk, Mass - died after 1900 probably in Lynn, Essex, Mass) m Lillian C Gardner (1862 – 1929). Lillian had two children from a previous marriage to Everett N Richardson.
- Caroline "Carrie" May Sampson (born 10 May 1863 in Boston, Suffolk, Mass) m Francis "Frank" H Sanborn ( 1866 – 1953) and had one child Ralph Edward Sanborn (1890 – 1971)
- Anna E Sampson (Apr 1865 Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts – 1 May 1964 Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts) married William S Henry, Jr (1862 – 1956). No children.
- Maria Adela Sampson (3 Oct 1867 Boston, Suffolk, Mass - 14 Aug 1949 Belmont, Middlesex, Mass) married Charles Grant Lenfest (21 Dec 1868 Cambridge, Mass - 26 Jan 1927 Boston, Mass) son of Solomon Lenfest, Jr (15 Aug 1822 Boston, Mass - 28 Jan 1883 Cambridge, Mass) and his wife Jane Turnbull (Oct 1824 in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada - 10 Jan 1909 Winchester, Middlesex, Mass). Maria Adela Sampson and Charles Grant Lenfest had four daughters:
- Evelyn May Lenfest (18 May 1892 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass – Apr 1985 Goffstown, Hillsborough, N.H.) married Ralph Kenyon Hope (16 Dec 1888 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 31 May 1937 in Everett, Middlesex, Mass) and they had two children: Barbara Hope and Robert "Bob" Hope.
- Marion Lenfest (Jan 1894 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass – 2 Jan 1958 Medfield, Norfolk, Mass) died unmarried, no children.
- Ethel Gertrude "Nana Gert" Lenfest (30 Sep 1898 Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 2 Feb 1995 in Nashville, Davidson, Tenn). m 1st Captain Roland Henry Baker, Sr (1 May 1897 West Newton, Middlesex, Mass - 27 Jan 1985 Elkins, Merrimack, N.H.) and had two children: Col Roland Henry Baker, Jr (10 Oct 1923 - 12 Jun 1994) and Jean baker (7 Feb 1928 - 21 Feb 2003). Gert m 2nd Captain Roland Harrison Choate (28 Sep 1888 in Beverly, Essex, Mass - 3 Jul 1959 in Everett, Middlesex, Mass).
- Helen F Lenfest (14 Feb 1903 in Chelsea, Suffolk, Mass - 28 Feb 1988 Hyannis, Barnstable, Mass) married Charles A Reisig.
He died on Saturday, May 30, 1913 aged 73 years, 6 months, 16 days.[5][6][16][17] His funeral was held in his residence at 78 Washington Ave, Chelsea. He was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, Middlesex, Massachusetts.[18]
