Settled in Brookfield, move to Lunenburg 1751, to Monadock No. 4, now Fitzwilliam, about 1765. 28 Sep 1755 commissioned Capt., Lt. Col. in 1770, fought valiantly at Bunker Hill, became Bridgadier-General 10 Aug 1776, but was soon forced to retired due to illness which rendered him blind.

Esquire", dated 2 Apr 1800, filed 5 Feb [sic, heirs cited 27 Feb] 1807; proved 19 May 1807, names wife Mary Reed; daughter Abigail now Abigail Grout; son James Reed; daughter Precilla now Precilla Joslin; son Frederick Reed; son Sylvanus Reed; son Hinds Reed; son Joseph Reed; daughter Saloma now Saloma Willard. Wife Mary Reed and Peter Snow of Fitchburg to be executors.
    26 Dec 1824: Priscilla Joslin, widow of James Joslin late of Leominster deceased, and Daughter of General James Reed late of Fitchburg, deceased, and the only surviving child of said Reed residing in this Commonwealth that executor Peter Snow is now deceased and executrix Mary wife of said Reed resides in the state of New Hampshire, aged and infirm, and incapable of managing even common concerns of life, requests a new administrator be appointed, personally suggesting David Wilder Esq'r of Leominster. 4 Jan 1825: Mary Reed of Troy, NH, cited.

  6.   From the paper on Gen. Reed: "In the 'Reed Genealogy' it is asserted that Gen. James Reed was a son of Joseph and Sarah (Rice) Reed, and was born in Woburn in 1724. The error has been repeated in several later publications."
