Ater the death of Gilbert RADCILIFFE, the Lords Survey of 1700-1710 show Gilbert had other lands which he compounded in 1643, namely the crofts at Belfast, the West Croft opposite Ballavarry and the adjoining land and un-named croft called Crot-a-Lough. His eldest son John rceeived Crot-a-Lough and the other intack holdings from the KINRY family while James who obtained Old Belfast and the West Croft "Voar y Sundher". Archdeacon KEWLEY wrote that the name "Radcliffe y Sudher" was applied to this branch of Radcliffe's as they were overseers of the highways. James is believed to have held the position of Sumner of Andreas. In 1672, he purchased a portion of Ballacross in the Treen of Mullen-Lowne, from John KNEALE. It consisted of a house, garden and adjacent land, called "McTEARE's half quarter" known as Mullen Beg, (Little Mill). |
