_DCAUSE: Chronic diarrhea while imprisoned during Civil War _PHOTO: James Posten was listed as a farmer living in Preston Glades, Preston County, VA in 1853. (Preston County Birth Records, 1853-1859) In 1860, he was working on his deceased father-in-law's farm and his children were living with his mother-in-law. (1860 US Census) According to Civil War service records, James served as a sergeant in the Union Army during the Civil War in the 1st West Virginia Cavalry, Company H. He initially volunteered for service in the Union Army on December 23, 1863 at New Creek, VA for a term of three years. Morton's History of Preston County states that he died during this service. Civil War pension records indicate that James was captured near Winchester, VA on July 19, 1864 and remained a prisoner of war until his death in a Danville, Virginia prison on February 7, 1865. His cause of death was "chronic diarrhea." He was noted to be age 35 at the time of his enrollment, and was employed as a school teacher in Preston County, VA. Nicholas Posten was listed as guardian of his minor children on his pension application. References
