Homer was living with his uncle, Nicholas Poston, and aunt Rosanna in Valley Township in 1870, after the death of both his mother and father. (US Census 1870)

By 1880, he was living in Arnettsville, Grant District of Monongalia County and was employed as a dry goods merchant. He was in partnership with his brother, Albert S. Posten, who was living with him.(US Census 1880)

Homer and Elizabeth were living in Fairmont, WV in 1910. He was listed as a store manager. They had 3 male boarders living at their home: Lynn Hastings, John H. Colebank, and William Clark. (1910 Census) Both Effie and Ruth were still at home.
