Moved younger kids in a wagon from TN to Valley Springs, AR so they could go to Valley Springs Academy. Returned to TN after the kids were all married off.[9]

His pension information says he was unmarried when he was released, though he had two children by then. A profile written by his great-grandson says he married Tennessee in 1860, and left her pregnant with their second child when he left for war. The reason for leaving (the state of) Tennessee for Arkansas is said to be his dissatisfaction with the state after Reconstruction.

It is possible that he is not the legitimate son of James, but rather the son of his mistress Susannah Greenwood. In 1850, there is an 11 year old James in both households. But there is no infant son in James Sr.’s 1840 census record. Susannah’s 1840 record has not been found. James’ brother Martin’s son Joseph is said to have said that he had a 1/2 Uncle James - not an Uncle James. On the other hand, if this James was out of the state and Susannah also had a son James, then Joseph may have only known one of the two.

  6. His daughter's family bible and his pension application (perhaps both written by or based on the same person) give his death date as April 1915. A war profile written decades later and his granddaughter have his deathdate as 31 Mar 1915. His tombstone evidently says 22 Apr 1913. The statewide Tennessee death index for 1915 does not have him listed; there is no index for 1913.
