James (The Trooper) MacKinlay went to Ireland acting as a guide to the victorious army of William III at the battle of the Boyne, July 1, 1690.
He married probably 1697-1700, and settled in Ireland, becoming the ancestor of a large portion of the Irish McKinleys.
At first it was supposed that James McKinley, Jr., born in Ireland in 1708, who settled in Pennsylvania, and died at the home of his great granddaughter, Mrs. Eleanor (Wiles) Goodwin, in Warren County, Ohio, in 1812, at the age of 104 years, was the ancestor of President McKinley, but later developments point to an elder son, David McKinley.
Children of James MacKinlay are:
- William 27 McKinley.
- David McKinley, born 1705 in Dervock, North Ireland; died 1757 in Chanceford Township, York County,
- Donald Ian McKinley, born 1707 in Conagher, Ballymore, Ulster, North Ireland.
-James McKinley, born 1708 in Dervock, North Ireland; died 1812 in Warren County, Ohio.
