Facts and Events
After the death of his parents in 1924, Hilary lived with his brother, Richard and his new bride, Beulah. Illness with a high fever at an early age left Hillary with brain damage in which his brain never grew even though his body continued to grow to be average in size. Hilary's father took him to an institution for the handicapped but after a short stay, the doctor called the parents of Hillary to tell them there was nothing they could do to help Hillary and he was being released from the hospital. Immediately, Calvin Lamar, Hillary's father, boarded the train and left to get Hillary and bring him home. The doctor at the hospital told Hillary's father that he was the first parent to come for his child as soon as he was contacted. He said, "Most parent leave their child a week or longer after being notified to come after them." Hillary loved children and 'played' and took very good care of Richard and Beulah's children, referring to them as "Pretty Bucks". Hillary collected string, feathers, colored marbles, wire, rocks, etc. His pockets were always full of these items and would have to be emptied on wash day. Mom said when she cleaned his room, she would find little pieces of wire rolled up in neat little balls. The earliest memory of Uncle Hillary was of him sitting in a cane bottomed chair behind a tin wood stove in our dining room and trotting Aileen and me on his knee and singing to us. When he died, they brought him back to the house and I would stand beside him, afraid to blink y eyes that he would breathe and I would not see it. He mut have been the first person I had seen dead.
