The area reserved was 5 acres fronting Reserve Street. The Eaglehawk Old Monumental Section is laid out in orderly rectangular plats. It has all denominations and a Paupers section. There are many magnificent trees lining the roadways such as Bunya Pines, Morton Bay Figs, Oak, Hoop Pine, Canary Island Pine and Silky Oak. The first recorded burial at the Eaglehawk Cemetery is that of 21 year old John Edmond McDonough. He was interred in Grave 1 Section C on 6th July 1864. Today there is still a monument standing that was erected in his memory. There have been 6 Sextons live in the Sextons Residence formerly located near the front gates of the old monumental section. The cottage was built in the 1870's and was demolished in the 1970's.

James Kitto came out to Australia in 1858 leaving his wife and children behind. He travelled with his brothers-in-law, Caroline's(his first wife) brothers. Caroline was pregnant with their last child so perhaps that is why she did not go with him, or perhaps their second daughter, Mary Hanna was sickly (she died in 1863) but she never saw him again as she died in Germoe on 22 Aug 1864 and is buried there with Mary Hanna. It must have been quite a reunion when he met his children again after 10 years when they arrived Mary Hanna. It must have been quite a reunion when he met his children again after 10 years when they arrived in 1868. I assume the children lived with their eldest sister, Elizabeth Jane, who married Peter Andrew about 1864, after their mother's death. They were certainly not short of relatives in Australia as 7 of Caroline's brothers and sisters and at least 3 of her Parsons cousins also settled in central Victoria

Died at the age of 64 as a Miner of Sailors Gully
